What is School Nursing?

School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and lifelong achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and/or potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning. ~ National Association of School Nurses

What Do School Nurses Do at SEDOL?

  • Provides health services that increase school attendance
  • Helps prevent and control the spread of communicable disease
  • Administers specialized services to students (medications, tube feedings, insulin, etc...)
  • Verifies immunizations to keep the school in compliance with state mandates
  • Provides health professional input and direction for school and community policies and programs
  • Educates students and staff on managing their own health and wellness
  • Assists in the evaluation of students for special education services
