Audiology

What is Audiology?

Educational audiologists are health care professionals who diagnose and manage hearing issues.  They can help families identify appropriate service providers, such as those that offer personal hearing and assistance technology,

Audiologists who are employed in school settings have an opportunity as well as responsibility to promote early detection and intervention for children with hearing and listening challenges.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) defines audiology as the identification of children with hearing impairments and the provision of services to support:

  • Identification: Identifying children with hearing loss
  • Determination: Determining the nature, range, and degree of hearing loss
  • Habilitation: Providing habilitation activities, such as auditory training, language habilitation, speech reading, and hearing evaluation
  • Prevention: Creating and administering programs to prevent hearing loss
  • Counseling: Counseling and guiding children, parents, and teachers about hearing loss
  • Amplification: Determining children's needs for amplification, selecting and fitting an appropriate aid, and evaluating the effectiveness of amplification
