Degrees and Certifications:
Miss Katie Boornazian
My name is Katie Boornazian and this is my 6th year teaching at the John Powers Center! This year, I have the pleasure of teaching Kindergarten through 2nd Grade!
I was born and raised in Connecticut, and went to college at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in New York, where I received my Bachelors in Graphic Design and my Masters in Deaf Education. I moved to Illinois in 2011, and have been working with elementary through high school deaf students ever since!
One of the biggest reasons why I became a teacher for the deaf is because I wanted to advocate for the needs of deaf children. I am profoundly deaf and was brought up oral with hearing aids, eventually learning sign language in college. Now, I like to think that I have the best of both worlds! My teaching philosophy is that communication is the key to success. I realize that every child learns differently and I enjoy helping students achieve goals and build self-advocacy skills that will benefit them in the future!
