Mr. Scott Cartier

This is my 20th year teaching Physical Education (PE) and Health Education at Cyd Lash Academy. In addition to teaching, I also coach the Coyote basketball program, which is affiliated with the Chicagoland Area Alternative Education League (CAAEL).

The mission of Cyd Lash Academy’s Physical Education Department is to promote a physically active lifestyle to all of our students, now and through adulthood.  The PE staff provides a curriculum that:

- Accommodates students at various stages of physical and emotional readiness.

- Focus on fitness and wellness.

- Teach the skills necessary to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

- Provide a sense of fun and enjoyment, while teaching appropriate sport behaviors.

A great emphasis has been placed on lifetime activities, however, traditional activities such as team and individual sports are also offered. Within each unit, students are taught basic, intermediate, and advanced skills based on their prior knowledge and level of participation in the sport/activity. Students learn the rules, appropriate sport behavior, etiquette, and strategies related to the various units. The PE program offers students a competitive and non-competitive activity each day within a given unit. Students may choose to either participate in a structured team activity or individual activity (i.e., fitness/weight room).

Students are also introduced to Adventure Education, which exposes students to appropriate, adventure-based activities as a means to promote human growth and development. Through core concepts such as problem solving, cooperation, communication, trust, and risk taking, students have opportunities for reflective processing through a variety of team building activities and challenge course activities. Here at Cyd Lash Academy, we use an approach known as “Challenge by Choice” whereby students choose to what extent and to what capacity they participate in these types of activities.
