Dear Parents,

I am so excited for this school year! This is going to be a terrific year! I have two amazing para professionals, Amy Sorby and Julie Walker. The Educational Team is outstanding! Our motto “Students First and Team Work.” I use total communication in my class including oral, pictures and simple sign language.

Our school curriculum is “Unique Curriculum.”  It is theme based and aligns with the Illinois Common Core Standards. The topics change each month.  Laremont is implemented a new communication program “Core Vocabulary” last year. Core Vocabulary is a picture system using more verbs than nouns. It is research based. I am very excited to implement it in my classroom. We will learn a color each week. We will learn one to four core vocabulary words each month. I plan to read one specific traditional book every two weeks. For example, September’s book is “If You Take a Mouse to School.”

I will send home a monthly calendar and news letter. We will be taking one mobility trip each month. The purpose of the mobility trip is to help the students transition skills learned in the class to more global situations. I base the mobility trip on the Unique Curriculum monthly topic.

We will being doing lots of sensory activities including water play. Please send in a swim suit, shorts or t-shirt that can get wet.

I will type a daily note to inform you of what we did as a class that day. I will try to make 1 or 2 statements specific to your child. Please email jrohrbach@sedol.us or call (847-986-2507) me any time.  I love talking about my students.

I thank you in advance for sharing your child with me. We have a great class. I am looking forward to an amazing year of learning.
