Ms. Maura Cunningham

Ms. Cunningham began her professional career in education within the Chicago Public School system, working in different regions of the city, serving diverse ethnic groups and students with disabilities as a graduate student, intern, and then as a certified school psychologist, before coming to SEDOL in August, 1998. Since her arrival, she has served in a variety of roles in the special education cooperative’s thirty-two member districts in different regions of the county, serving diverse ethnic groups and students with disabilities. Assignments have included assessment of students ranging from early childhood through high school; consultation and evaluation of SEDOL students with developmental delays, emotional and learning disabilities, mild to moderate retardation, and autism, as well as students with visual, hearing, physical, and other health impairments; direct service counseling for both elementary and high school level students with emotional disturbance.  Additionally, Ms. Cunningham case managed students requiring service outside the district for two years with SEDOL’s Private Placement Team. These are some of Lake County’s most needy students and families requiring alternative public and private day school and residential services. Not only has Ms. Cunningham been exposed to and worked extensively with diverse populations, both culturally and with regard to educational and life needs, she also comes from a family of veterans in the field of education and understands the importance of working as a team in resolving student issues.
