Ms. Iftekhar

Hi! My name is Nadia Iftekhar and this is my fourth school year at John Powers Center. This year, I am a middle school teacher and I teach a variety of different subjects including math, social studies and reading!

I earned my Bachelor's of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 2011. After that, I got my Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults certification from the University of Cambridge ESOL. I traveled to the Middle East as an English Teacher, and that is where I found my love of teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and learning sign languages! After teaching abroad, I came back to New York City to study at Columbia University's Teachers College. I graduated with my M.Ed in Education of Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and an M.A. in Elementary Inclusive Education in 2015. I now live with my husband in the northern suburbs of Chicago.

One of the reasons why I became a teacher for the Deaf is because I believe that Deaf/Hard of Hearing students have the same potential for success as their hearing peers if given access to the right tools and communication. My teaching philosophy is that it is the responsibility of educators to customize teaching to meet the needs of each learner, rather than trying to fit the learner into their teaching.
