ELP High School Classroom:
My name is Karen Schreck and I have a class full of Schreck Adventurers! I have the assistance of three wonderful paraprofessionals and together, we run a high school classroom that is preparing our students for independence as much as possible and life after school ends. We use News-2-You to read a newspaper about a topic or current event going on that is of interest to our students. We watch 10 minutes of CNN Student News on a regular basis to see what is happening in the world and to vote on the top humanitarian in a special segment. We enjoy sharing with one another Roving Reporter on Tuesdays with articles in sports, entertainment and news. We use the Unique Curriculum to meet individual needs of each student and learn in science, social studies, math, and reading comprehension. We also participate in work/voc groups to build age-appropriate work skills and choice groups to serve all students giving them opportunities to make choices, socialize, and develop their special interests. We promote communication through the use of computers, speech generating devices, switches and eye gaze boards. We enjoy exploring different adaptive technology or equipment to enable each student to have some control over the world around them. We have lots of switch-adapted devices that students can enjoy during activities and rec/leisure periods. We love to do creativeity activities and games. We do week-in-review speeches every Thursday. Approximately once a month, we go on a Mobility Trip into the community to apply skills learned in the classroom which are usually related to the curriculum topic of the month. We enjoy learning and sharing with others. Welcome and thank you for visiting our page.
